Lactalis Canada buys Agropur's fine cheese division
Deal includes OKA, Monsieur Gustav and L'Extra brands
Lactalis Canada has agreed to acquire the fine cheese division of Agropur Cooperative, including the Quebec-made brands OKA, Monsieur Gustav and L'Extra, two production facilities in Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe, and fine cheese import activities, the company announced July 15.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to approval by Competition Bureau Canada.
The acquisition adds approximately 400 employees to Lactalis Canada's workforce of 4,500 and expands its cheese portfolio, which already includes Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, Balderson, Galbani and Président.
"This acquisition represents a major opportunity for Lactalis to build on flagship Quebec brands and outstanding cheesemaking expertise," said Emmanuel Besnier, chairman of Lactalis Group.
Mark Taylor, president and CEO of Lactalis Canada, said the company is committed to preserving the authenticity and quality of the acquired brands and to maintaining its presence in the Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe communities.
