Ireland’s cattle trade shows that factories can afford to pay more for meat
Ireland’s strong cattle trade shows that, “factories can afford to pay more,” according to the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA).According to reporting in Agriland, Brendan Golden, IFA national live stock chairperson, saw that finished cattle in marts are earning up to 30c per kg more than the current Irish factory price. Golden said that this was being driven by procurement managers and agents.
The steer price is generally €3.75/kg and €3.80/kg for heifers. Golden said that, “…deals are being done for more, including arrangements on transport, weight and specs in some places.”
The IFA noted that cattle prices have recently strengthened, with P grades selling at €3.00/kg and high-quality cows making €3.50/kg. Golden expects supply number to drop in the next few weeks.
Industry data shows that Ireland’s weekly cattle kill is running at 35,000 to 36,000 per week and that the steer kill is now 25,000 more than this time in 2019.
