A vaccination strategy to target up to 1.3 million animals has been announced by the French Ministry of Agriculture in the wake of an outbreak at a farm in Allier with serotype eight of the virus.

A total of 37 cases – 27 in cattle and six in sheep – was confirmed on one holding by the Ministry on Friday.

This is the first French case of Bluetongue since 2012 and the first case of serotype eight since 2010.

“Protection zones” of 150 kilometre radius are in place around the affected holding in Led Brulards, Louroux de Bouble.

The ministry has called a meeting for Thursday 17 September where ministers will discuss financial measures to support farmers in the outbreak zone, with talks to also be held with European Commission ministers to confirm management measures and health surveillance in place.

Clinical signs were displayed by one sheep of all animals tested positive.
