Bat-borne Lyssavirus Found On Queensland Farm
AUSTRALIA - Queensland’s biosecurity response is likely to be the model for the whole of the country, following a lyssavirus outbreak in horses.A property near Allora in southern Queensland is believed to have two horses with the bat-borne lyssavirus, reports ABC News.
Micro-bats are thought to be responsible for the spread after the very small bats were found nesting locally.
Queensland’s biosecurity officer, Jim Thompson, believes this to be the first instance of the virus in horses.
He added that interstate police will follow the outbreak and national protocols will probably take the same form as those currently in Queensland.
Observation and quarantine measures are in place.
