US beef exports to Taiwan up 19% through April - USMEF
Caribbean and ASEAN shipments also post strong gains
April beef exports to Taiwan totalled 4,892 mt, up 9% from a year ago, while value increased 3% to $55.8 million, according to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
Through April, exports to Taiwan rose 19% to 19,801 mt, with value up 11% to $224.2 million. The US remains Taiwan's dominant supplier of chilled beef, holding two-thirds of the chilled import market.
Beef exports to the Caribbean climbed 17% in April to 3,275 mt, with value up 35% to $38.6 million, driven by growth to most islands including the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and the Netherlands Antilles. Through April, exports to the region were up 8% to 12,271 mt, with value climbing 29% to $141.4 million.
Exports to the ASEAN region reached 3,555 mt in April, up 48% from a year ago, with value up 50% to just under $30 million. The gains were driven by shipments to Indonesia rebounding from last year's minimal total to their highest level since December, and demand in Vietnam strengthening to its highest level since October. Through April, beef exports to ASEAN climbed 31% in volume to 11,049 mt and 38% in value to $94.4 million.
