New Rules Introduced For Quality Beef Destined For Russia
ARGENTINA – Stringent packaging and slaughtering rules are being introduced to ensure traceability for certain higher quality beef cuts to be exported to the Russian market. After comprehensive evaluation of current beef standards, the National Health and Food Quality Service (SENASA) has formalised a protocol that sets minimal grazing requirements for fattened high-end cattle.
For meat to be be sold under the 'high quality' brand it will soon have to come from exclusively pasture raised cattle from weaning age. The animals must be finished on a balanced diet with a high energy content for the last 120 days of finishing.
The change also brings in tighter controls on cattle transportation and slaughter.
Slaughering and deboning must occur in 'physically and geogrpahically' different locations.
Cuts will need to be vacuum packed and labelled immediately. This will ensure traceability, SENASA has stated.
Officially published under code Resolution 187/2013, the resolution uses similar guidelines to those adopted by European member states.
