Senators Request Immediate Attention to Dairy Crisis
WISCONSIN, US - A group of U.S. Senators (including Senator Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold) have requested Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack's immediate and aggressive attention to the current crisis in the dairy sector. In their letter dated July 15, 2009, the group stressed that America's dairy producers are facing the worst prices in nearly 30 years -- a situation which jeopardizes the long term stability of the industry and the livelihood of thousands of rural communities, says a Dairy Business Association report.
According to the association, the group urges Secretary Vilsack to use bold and swift action to temporarily increase the Dairy Price Support program products purchases by a significant level - a move needed to begin to restore farm level prices and help restore producers' ability to produce basic cash flow for their operations.
