An NFU Cymru spokesman said its members were also outraged with farmers importing cattle into this country and saw the importation of infected cattle into North Wales as a “sad reflection” on the industry.

Kirsty Williams AM told farmers at an NFU Cymru Brecon and Radnor county meeting: “I absolutely fail to understand why farmers are bringing livestock into the UK at a time when bluetongue is circulating viciously on mainland Europe. Not only are farmers putting their own stock at risk but their neighbours also and this is something I cannot comprehend.

“I see no other way for farmers to protect their stock – other than to vaccinate.”
