AUSTRALIA - After a six month drop in supply it appears that cattle numbers in Australian feedlots are back on the rise, despite continuing hikes in grain prices and a strong Australian dollar.

According to the Weekly Times, the latest survey of lot feeders shows the number of cattle on feed lifted 13 per cent in the past six months. The total number of cattle on feed is now 685,756 head, 21 per cent on June last year.
The numbers, gathered in the Australian Lot Feeders Association and Meat and Livestock Australia quarterly survey, show the total number of cattle now in feedlots is making up just 51 per cent of available capacity.
Compared to June last year, where use was 77 per cent, this is still a long way behind. But much of the modest lift is attributed to a jump in the availability of cheaper feeder cattle from drought-stricken areas in northern Australia.
