“Excellent news for the two companies, their members and the whole dairy industry”

NFU dairy board chairman Gwyn Jones

"We continue to make progress with regards to the due diligence work necessary to enable both Boards to endorse the merger to their Members."

National Farmers' Union dairy board chairman Gwyn Jones said: "This is excellent news for the two companies, their members and the whole dairy industry.

"It is important that we see rationalisation within the industry and although there is still a due diligence and member approval process to go through this is a big step forward."

NFU Scotland Milk Committee Chairman Willie Lamont said: "This is very good news from the OFT and represents a forward-thinking approach to the dairy sector.

"There has been a need for consolidation in the dairy sector for years and this could provide a strong platform for the future of the industry. That is in the interests of everyone in the supply chain, particularly consumers."
