New Regulations For Canadian Cheese
OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced new cheese composition standards that could significantly impact dairy imports from the EU and the US.The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is proposing changes to the Dairy Products Regulations and the Food and Drug Regulations to amend the compositional standards for cheese.
The Honourable Chuck Strahl Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister Responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, announced on February 7, 2007 that he had asked the CFIA to launch a regulatory process related to the compositional standards for cheese. The proposed changes are based on the recommendations of the Moderator of the Dairy Industry Working Group, a group which involved representatives of the Dairy Processors Association of Canada and the Dairy Farmers of Canada.
The proposed amendments will eliminate inconsistencies in current regulations and provide clarification and uniformity with regards to cheese ingredients. The Government has also taken into account international standards and other countries’ regulations. The regulations will apply to both imported and domestic cheese.
