Saving Seems Simple. Just Reduce Calving Period.

UK - A beef and sheep farmer – featured in Farmers Guardian last year – is managing to save more than £2,350 a year simply by reducing the calving period of his suckler cows.

Improving the performance of the 56-strong herd was a key objective for Graham Probert at 250-acre Great Bottom Farm, Penrhos, Raglan, Monmouth shire, since becoming one of the network of demonstration farms in the Farming Connect sheep and beef development programme run across Wales by the Hybu Cig Cymru red meat development body in 2005.

Farmers at an open day were told on-going calculations showed that changes over the last few years had, in fact, improved the performance of the herd by nearly £50 per cow – based on 47 cows calving.

More calves were being sold per year and herd management simplified due to a tighter calving period and the reduced age range of calves, making routine procedures more efficient and cost effective.

Based on extra weight at sale and savings of around two hours per cow a year across the herd, it is reckoned Mr Probert achieved a minimum benefit of £2,350.
