Experts debate possible effects of disease on USA's food supply

U.S. Agriculture Department investigators worked Thursday through the holiday to track the stricken cow's history as a nation of red-meat eaters — Americans consume an average of 67 pounds of beef per person each year — sat down to Christmas dinner. Turkey or ham already was on many traditional menus, but some last-minute shoppers shied from steaks and roasts as a fresh debate arose over the safety of the nation's food — and images of Europe's mad cow epidemic in the 1990s replayed on TV news.
