Dr. Scott Smith, a Dairy Packaged Goods Specialist at Elanco, was recently interviewed by The Dairy Site's Sarah Mikesell at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Elanco has some exciting news to share. What's new at Elanco?

We're very happy to be here representing a couple of new products for our cattle portfolio. The first one is Pradalex, which is an injectable antibiotic, a fluoroquinolone. It the first new antibiotic approved in over 10 years from the FDA, and that's labeled for pneumonia in calves. We're early in the launch phase of that product, but so far, we're getting particularly good feedback from our customers that have been using that product across the US.

What's the second product?

Our second product is in a similar arena, a new vaccine. It’s our Titanium 5, a five-way viral vaccine. It's a pneumonia preventative, and it's combined now for the first time in a single dose with our Neuplura pH, which has our recombinant Mannheimia vaccine. It's can be used with calves for the prevention of pneumonia due to the viral Mannheimia haemolytica

What are some other key solutions that Elanco offers right now?

One of the big things that we are focusing on now is in the sustainability space, and primarily through enteric methane reduction. We have a newer product that's been in the marketplace for a little over a year now, Bovaer, which is labeled for the reduction of enteric methane. Through a network of carbon buyers, we've been able to have our dairy producer customers get paid for enteric methane reductions that they have achieved through feeding this product.

What are some of the other products that you're considering in that sustainability space?

We're always evaluating where we can have a fit, but it needs to be based in sound science, data and approved protocols. We're always constantly evaluating what other products in our portfolio would maybe fit through that process. Whether it's other feed additives, some sort of genetic intervention, or certainly there's a lot of manure management interventions around the methane production process, but we're pleased that we've got Bovaer. We are in a good position there to be an active part of that new segment of the business.

What are some of the things, either at this show or things that you're hearing out in the field, that producers are talking about right now?

Currently, there's a lot of concern and buzz around the possibility of New World Screwworm entering the US. That's been in the press a lot over the last couple of weeks. I've been hearing a lot of these discussions, especially in the southern states where there is higher risk. Even across other parts of the US, there's concern about the potential for that to enter the US and how to respond if this occurs.

There's always new technology at every conference and every meeting. What will help with efficiency, maintain better records and just do a better job overall at monitoring the performance of our dairy cows, but also our replacements as we're raising those up.

Producers seem to have more and more access to data. How do we help producers work through and get the insights from data?

An extremely critical component for the future of dairy industry and the future of agriculture in general is very data-driven and automated. We're using artificial intelligence more and more every day, every week and that's making its way into agriculture and dairy production as well.

How can Elanco help people analyze their data and help them gain real insights from what they're capturing.

We have people on our team that are solely dedicated to dairy data analytics. We also have economists on our team because dairy economics is an extremely important topic. We have a lot of capabilities across our dairy team in multiple disciplines across the data analytics part of the business.

The economic side of this is so important now. How important is efficiency?

The name of the game is how we can make the most of the limited resources that are available to us. How we can make the most of our employment base, and efficiency is definitely the primary goal here.
