Ranchers are being told of the reliability of photos and the help they bring in spotting changes to rangeland conditions.
The NRCS is offering a free webinar on Thursday 22 May on how to document drought recovery and stress in rangelands.
Julie Elliot, from the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in northeast Colorado, is putting together webinars to spread the word on how and why photography can be used in grazing decisions.
Mrs Elliot believes change can be spotted sooner with photos, whether good or bad, and the reason for the change can be explained.
It could be an improvement from a management consideration or a worsening from drought, she explained.
“There might be more cheat grass or more bare ground, but we don’t want to see it,” Mrs Elliott said. “Photos help keep us honest.”
