Mexico Shows ‘Strength of Character’ to Become Top Six Cattle Country

15 May 2015

MEXICO – Far reaching work in Mexico’s cattle sector has propelled the country to second in the world for live cattle exports and sixth for beef exports, a conference has heard.

Reasons why Mexico's industry has 'overcome adversity' were given as health status advances, rangeland rehabilitation, breeding programmes and laboratory studies.

The combination has seen ‘unprecedented’ results in the livestock sector.

This is according to agriculture minister Enrique Martinez y Martinez in his closing remarks to the National Confederation of Livestock Organisation annual convention, who praised the industry in coping with floods, droughts and disease epidemics in recent times.

He said more than 450 dams and water treatment works across the country were also playing a part in advancing the cattle sector.

“Today, farmers in Mexico should be optimistic about the future, as we are united and cohesive to maintain industry alliances,” Mr Martinez told the conference.

“We have worked in coordination with the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations, their unions and associations, to achieve unprecedented results in the Mexican livestock sector.”
