Efforts must focus on the dairying heartland of the country, animal health speakers have advised, ahead of a regional drive to eliminate TB from Santiago’s dairy herds.

Dr Rafael Tamayo, director of the National Training Programme in the Control and Eradication of Bovine Tuberculosis has said farms around Santiago face losses unless ‘specific preventative actions’ are forthcoming.

The Austral University of Chile researcher’s message coincides with the training of livestock veterinarians covering the considerable land from Viña del Mar to as far south as Talca, around 350 kilometres away.

Technical livestock inspectors and veterinarians met last week to flesh out collaborative policies at seminars organised by the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) of Santiago.

Loreto Alvarez, regional director of the Santiago SAG district said that it was important to trust and learn from University experts regarding sanitation and control.

This, he said, must be underpinned with cooperation, adding: "We believe that these approaches allow us to unite all stakeholders in the plan of controlling bovine tuberculosis, especially in this area where the conditions and scenarios of intensive dairying make dealing with it more challenging."
