Print This Page Trouble in Montana: Brucellosis Status Downgraded
MONTANA, US - The Montana Department of Livestock announced Wednesday that the state has lost its brucellosis-free status, meaning cattle shipped out of Montana will have to be tested for the disease.The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service downgraded the state's brucellosis status from Class Free to Class A, writes Erin Madison for the GreatFallsTribune.
The downgrade comes after brucellosis, which can cause female cattle to abort their young, was found twice in Montana in the past two years. Dr. Marty Zaluski, state veterinarian for the MDL, said the downgrade was not a surprise.
"Everyone knew this was coming," Zaluski said. "This just makes it official."
