Brazil suspends FMD vaccination for seven more states in 2024
Currently, only 5 states are FMD-free without vaccination

By: Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) will suspend vaccination against foot-and-mouth (FMD)disease in seven more states from April 2024, director of animal health Eduardo de Azevedo announced during the 3rd National Forum of the Strategic Plan of the National Surveillance Program for Foot-and-mouth Disease (PE-PNEFA 2017-2026). The event took place last Friday.
The measure continues the advancement of the Strategic Plan that aims to create and maintain sustainable conditions to ensure the status of a country free of foot-and-mouth disease and expand the areas free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, protecting the national livestock heritage and generating maximum benefits to the actors involved and to Brazilian society.
Suggested states include Amapá, Bahia, Maranhão, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima and Sergipe.
Currently, in Brazil, only the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Acre, Rondônia and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso have the international certification of foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination.
