Brazil's Beef Sector Continues to Grow

05 September 2016

BRAZIL - The livestock production chain generated BRL 483.5 billion (USD 148.47 billion) last year, according to an annual report by the Association of Brazilian Beef Exporters (Abiec).

That's an increase of 27 per cent over the previous year's levels. According to Abiec, since the first survey of the series in 2010, there was an increase of 44.7 per cent.

The association adds that livestock's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) accounts for 30 per cent of the GDP of the Brazilian agricultural sector, which, in its turn, accounts for 21.5 per cent of the country's GDP. In this respect, livestock's share in Brazil's economy is 6.8 per cent.

Within foreign trade, Brazilian beef exports totalled USD 5.9 billion in 2015, which accounted for 3 per cent of all of Brazil's foreign sales last year.

"In contrast to the negative wave impacting the majority of the sectors of the Brazilian economy, agribusiness continues to grow, and beef's industrial system is one of the most dynamic of the sector," said Abiec's president, Antônio Jorge Camardelli, in a statement.
