The departments discussed animal health issues related to the bilateral trade in animals at the meeting.

According to the Brazilian animal health department, technicians from both countries reached an agreement at the meeting on the new animal health certificate, which will enable exports of cattle for breeding in Bolivia.

Officials expect this will enable more trade opportunities between Brazilian and Bolivian producers, as well as contribute to the coercion of the smuggling of animals in the border region between the two countries.

"The authorisation of cattle exports to Bolivia shows a recognition by the Veterinary Service of the excellent health condition of the Brazilian herd," said the animal health director Guilherme Henrique Figueiredo Marques.

"In addition, it would contribute to the cattle restocking in Bolivian regions affected last year by the flood of Beni and Mamore rivers, when more than 400,000 specimens died."

Mr Marques also said that those producers interested in exporting cattle to Bolivia should contact agriculture officials to acquaint themselves with the sanitary requirements set by local authorities.

At the meeting, the agriculture department also pledged to support the prevention and diagnosis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as Mad Cow Disease), and discussed the prevention of Foot and Mouth re-introduction across the two countries.
