Post-Russia Ban Year Smashes UK Cheese Export Record

UK – UK cheese exports for the 12 months post-Russia ban have beaten all records, rising to 141 thousand tonnes, reflecting a rise in non-EU exports.

South Africa and the Middle East/North Africa region bought an additional three thousand tonnes on the prior year, with exports 11 per cent higher on the previous year.

Imports, meanwhile, fell back 2 per cent (11,000 tonnes), which is “welcome news” for the industry, according to levy board AHDB Dairy.

New “upcoming” markets should help “lay solid foundations” to more trade, the board added.

However, a spokesperson for AHDB Dairy noted the lift in volumes to Middle East/North Africa coincide with “significant discounts” on product to these areas.

The spokesperson added: “While this may be UK cheese manufacturers clearing some of their high cheese stocks, if it leads to repeat orders, it could still bring benefits in the longer term."
