The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), state governments and private enterprise worked together to rid Brazil of the disease.

The eradication effort is important for the maintenance and opening of new international markets, with Brazil expected to account for about 45 per cent of the world market for meat by 2020.

Leading beef region, Mato Grosso state, reported the best vaccination rate, with 28.4 million head of cattle vaccinated at a rate of 99.61 per cent. The last case of the disease in the state occurred more than 19 years ago.

Brazil's second cattle region, Minas Gerais, with over 23.5 million animals, saw 97.22 per cent coverage. Other states with good vaccination rates include Goiás, where 99.6 per cent of the 21.3 million head of cattle were vaccinated, and Mato Grosso do Sul, where 99.26 per cent of 21 million animals were immunised.

Official veterinarians of the states persist in seeking to vaccinate 100 per cent of their animals, even though the vaccination campaign has now finished.
