Summer All-Grazing No Longer Predominates
UK – More dairy farms keep cows inside 24 hours a day and fewer stick to traditional grazing, reveals a report of UK farms published in the American Dairy Science Association journal.Year round indoor feeding and continuous housing are becoming more prevalent in Britain, according to a study of 864 UK farms at Scotland’s Rural College.
Herds that don’t see pasture at all represented eight per cent of the survey, while only one per cent of farmers said their cows don’t get housed inside.
Of farms surveyed, 38 per cent of all farmers said all milking cows received some indoor summer feeding.
Meanwhile, 31 per cent maintained a “traditional grazing system,” feeding no forage indoors in summer.
