Italian Cheese Production Higher

ITALY – Cheese production levels are strong this year for all major cheeses, the Italian Dairy Association (ASSOLATTE) has revealed.

June production has been strong for all cheeses except Gorganzola which enjoyed high output levels during a period of ‘abundant’ supply through the first five months, keeping monthly output ahead of last year to date.

First half Grana Padano production has been 4.1 per cent higher than for the same period last year. March April and May were the most productive months, surpassing those of 2012.

Parmesan has been static, marginally ahead of 2013 production as the product weathers price drops of nine per cent.

A decline was noted in Asiago production following supply regulation. Production for March and April fell 7.1 and 4.2 per cent respectively, although June allowed a catch-up, seeing output lift 8.4 per cent.
