Health Experts Launch Investigation Into CJD Death
US – Health services are investigating a case of variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (CJD) following an autopsy on a patient in Texas.Laboratory tests confirmed the rare, fatal, degenerative brain disorder, widely believed to be caused by consuming cows with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, on 2 June.
Also known as ‘mad cow disease’, CJD has a ‘classic’ form not caused by BSE which occurs worldwide and in one to two in a million in the US.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reported the case, are continuing efforts to confirm further details of the patients history, including possible infection sources.
The case is the fourth reported in the US with infection thought to have come from outside US boundaries.
Extensive travel to Europe and the Middle East support the theory that infection occurred outside the US, the CDC said.
