One of Two Egyptian Slaughterhouses Fails Australian Welfare Check
EGYPT – One out of two Egyptian abattoirs accused of mistreating Australian cattle was in breach of international animal welfare standards in May 2013, a joint slaughter review has found.

The findings come from a report between the Department of Agriculture of the Australian and Egyptian governments which assessed animal welfare standards at two abattoirs.
The failing abattoir flagged up a lack of consistency in animal welfare standards for live exports from Australia to Egypt, the Australian government said this week.
Australian officials imposed a voluntary ban on Egyptian live exports in May 2013, although this has little effect following Egypt’s hormone growth promotant ban in August 2012.
An Australian government recommendation has been to implement the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance Scheme (ESCAS) before exports of slaughter and feeder livestock resume.
