EU Commission Progresses Research Plans on Agriculture Sustainability
EU - The European Commission has published the first set of calls for research projects under 'Horizon 2020' for 2014 and 2015. Two feed-related topics are included in the programme aimed to improve the sustainability of agriculture.According to the European Feed Manufacturers Association (FEFAC), among the various topics addressed the societal challenge 'Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research' includes two topics of particular relevance for the feed sector:
- Genetics and nutrition and alternative feed sources for terrestrial livestock production (SFS-01a-2014) covers, among others, research in precision feeding. A budget of €7 to €9 million is foreseen for this call.
- Proteins of the future (SFS-15-2014:) addresses more specifically the sustainable production and food consumption of proteins but does not exclude proteins for feed use. A budget of €9 million is foreseen and participation of SMEs is encouraged.
The deadline for submission of projects is 12 March 2014 for the two calls.
Feed companies interested in participating in a consortium are invited to contact knowledge providers.
FEFAC stresses that these calls are multidisciplinary, meaning that any research project should address all elements of the calls and consortia should therefore include a large spectrum of experts going far beyond just animal nutrition.
