Germany Top of EU Dairy

GERMANY – Germany produced more milk and turned it into more cheese, butter and cream than anyone else in the European Union (EU) last year.

EU milk deliveries totalled 140.2 million tonnes, of which 29.7 million came from Germany, over a fifth of the EU total, say Eurostat figures.

German dairies produced 23 per cent of EU cheese, 21 per cent of cream and 23 per cent of butter in 2012.

France came second with 21, 16 and 20 per cent respectively.

The United Kingdom produced the most drinking milk (6.9 million tonnes), 22 per cent of EU total while Germany came second with 5.3 million tonnes at 16 per cent.
