Cattle Prices Back Across Great Britain
UK – Cattle and carcass prices took a tumble under pressure across Great and Britain and Northern Ireland, say market experts.Steers were back three pence to 391.9p/kg with the R3 value down 4.1 p/kg to 395.2p/kg, Livestock and Meat Commission Northern Ireland analysts have announced.
All regions have seen a 2-4p/kg drop in steers while heifers were 3p/kg lower to 390.1p/kg. R3 heifers lost 4.3p/kg to 393.3p/kg.
Northern England had the lower prices, around 21p/kg below the Scottish value. Not compared to the Republic of Ireland (ROI) however, reporting 333.6p/kg for R3 steer prices.
Contrastingly, ROI had the highest cull cow prices in the British Isles, topping at 270.8p/kg.
In Northern Ireland, producers are advised to observe a variation between slaughtering facilities, with the LMC reporting average values of 364-366p/kg.
An LMC spokesperson said: “Producers should consult with individual plants with regards to the bonus available for in spec steers and heifers as requirements and level of bonuses vary from plant to plant.”
Furthermore, the LMC added that supplies are good, at three per cent higher than the corresponding week last year and meeting demand.
Prime cattle throughput was 7,013 and direct ROI imports totalled 591 – eight per cent of the total. Last year, ROI cattle totalled 862 at 13 per cent of all prime killings.
Cow kill has been on the rise, showing seasonal patterns. Cow data shows 2,504 slaughterings, up nine per cent on the previous week but 14 per cent down on the same week last year.
