More Livestock Affected by FMD Outbreak in Russia
RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported two further outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in Priargunsky District affecting cattle, pigs and sheep.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 15 on 9 October 2013.
Antigen (Ag) detection ELISA, complement fixation test (CFT) and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests were carried out in cattle at the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Health (FGBI-ARRIAH) on 7 October. All tests confirmed the presence of the FMD virus, serotype A.
A total of 193 cattle and 50 pigs showed signs of susceptibility, out of which 110 cattle were found affected, while no pigs showed any signs of being affected. No animals were destroyed and no deaths were reported.
The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
