Nicaraguan Livestock Sector Maintains Output
NICARAGUA – Beef and milk production is moving at a steady pace in the beef industry, government figures show.Little over 417,000 head of cattle were slaughtered during the first half of the year.
This was slightly below 2012 statistics but according to Ariel Bucardo, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, ‘keeps pace with last year’.
The majority of cattle were sold directly to beef plants but 46,000 were exported liveweight for Central American markets.
Milk figures also appear on track with June volumes reaching 11.5 million gallons. This equates to 45 per cent of the annual target of 224.8 million gallons.
Ariel Bucardo said: “Our nation’s livestock sector has great potential to grow and place products in the international market relative to demand and prices.”
The overall goal of the National Livestock Commission (CONAGAN) is to ‘improve food safety through a dynamic and intensive livestock sector with better genetics, management and productivity'', according to Commission President, Rene Blandon.
