New Vaccine Strain Furthers Brucellosis Treatment

A joint team of Spanish veterinarians from the National University, the Public University Navarra and the University of Cost Rica has developed a new strain of a vaccine for Brucells spp (expressing green fluorescent protein) and an additional identification for vaccinated and infected animals.

The product, Brucella abortus S19 vaccine-GFP is already registered in Europe, Asia, America and the US.

The new strain induces vaccinated antibodies reactive with fluorescent protein related to the vaccine. This allows differentiation between vaccinated and infected animals, explained Edgardo Moreno, a researcher in Tropical diseases at the National University.

"The breakthrough now means we can take a traditional vaccine is very good but it has the disadvantage of not differentiating vaccinated from infected animals,” said Mr Moreno.

“What we did was to genetically modify a gene expressing fluorescent protein and diagnostic assays designed to differentiate vaccinated from infected animals, which led to the patent."
