More than five times the recommended number of cattle is currently under the official care of Assam’s 571 veterinary doctors, according to a range of sources.

Government standards set out a system in which every vet is responsible for 5,000 head of cattle – currently the figure is 26,000 head.

Vacancies amount to 115 posts with 200 new hospitals proposed for construction.

The project is expected to be completed in five years.
