China Reports Further FMD Outbreak in Tibet
CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported a further outbreak of foot and mouth disease at Linzhi in Tibet.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 1 on 11 July. The outbreak was first observed on 9 June and confirmed on the same date. It was the reported to the concerned authorities on 10 July after enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), gene sequencing and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests were conducted on cattle and pigs at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, the OIE's reference laboratory.
A total of 181 cattle were found susceptible to the FMD virus, serotype A, out of which 51 cases were reported. While no deaths were recorded, all 181 animals were destroyed.
In the case of pigs, 308 animals showed signs of susceptibility to the virus. A total of 21 pigs were found to be affected. Again no deaths were recorded, but all 308 animals were destroyed.
The OIE, in conjunction with the Chinese authorities, have applied several measures to control the spread of the disease in the region.
The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
