Government Prepares to Limit Whey Imports
COLOMBIA – The government is preparing to impose tighter controls on whey imports as part of measures to support the dairy sector.

This will be managed through the ‘Triple A Committee’ for Customs and Tariff Affairs which is expected to suspend 3,000 tons of whey, currently with a 20 per cent tariff.
The committee will explore the scope for limiting milk powder in accordance with World Trade Organisation rulings.
Storage capacity plans have also been laid out by the government. This covers future purchases of milk at times of over production.
Additionally, the introduction of a 10 billion peso stabilisation fund is hoped to offset any developing chasm between domestic and foreign prices. Export inventory leverage is also expected to be introduced to 20,000 tons.
The government stated that the announcements affect over 350,000 farming families, both in terms of income and support.
