Situated in Koduvalli, near Red Hills, the new centre is providing local farmers with the necessary equipment to produce more, high-quality milk.

A comprehensive service is expected to be provided, including; disease monitoring and education, veterinary care, nutrition advice and hygienic milking equipment, according to reports from the Hindu Times.

Initially proposed two years ago by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, the centre was opened was last year when a modern and clean milking parlour was constructed for safe milk production.

The site works along an ‘eco-friendly’ theme which the Vice Chancellor of the project, Mr R. Prabakaran says will recycle all waste.

Fodder for the centre is raised organically, utilising manure collected daily and the remaining dung produces bio-gas to power the hostel kitchen.

Daily milk collections reach almost 125 litres, for which 30 rupees per litre is paid.

Local farmer Mr V. Parthiban, who houses 60 of his cows at the centre said: “The centre is very useful to us, where the animals get free medical attention as well as fodder. Moreover, the milking is done in a hygienic atmosphere. It will be difficult to get all these facilities under one roof.”

The project’s success has spurred university staff into planning a government proposal to start similar centres in other areas.
