Cattle Sold At Auction Following Farmer Arrest
CANADA – Cattle have had to be sold at auction in Saskatchewan following the arrest of two farmers after Animal Rights officers discovered 300 animals in ‘distress’ on an Assiniboia farm.Allen and Bryan Lowden were arrested last month after the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was alerted about food and water shortages, reports CBC News.
The men were taken under the Animal Protection Act and the Criminal Code.
An inspection of the animals was carried by the SPCA on arrival and the Lowdens were given five days to rectify the welfare issues. Most of the cattle were sold at auction on Tuesday with a small number of big steers and a bull being left, Allen Lowden told CBC.
He added that they had not been given enough time to make things right.
"They said they would only take the ones in poor condition," said Allen Lowden. "But they took pretty well all our breeding animals. All they left us was some big steers and some bulls."
Kaley Pugh of the SPCA said that this is not the first complaint received about the Lowden’s, who they have been dealing with for a significant amount of time.
Investigations are on-going and Mrs Pugh was unable to comment further.
