The information gathered will be used in Stocktake, EBLEX’s new annual costs of production survey, which will replace Business Pointers. Costs of production data will be taken from farms across the country to help identify best practice and where efficiencies can be made.

By allowing farmers to look at national averages figures, positive changes can be made, said Mark Topliff, EBLEX Head of Inputs and Production Economics.

“Stocktake will enable beef and sheep producers to benchmark their costs of production against the national figures. The assessment will help them identify where positive changes can be made to their enterprises to improve efficiency," Mr Topliff commented.

Farmers are being recruited to spend time working with a trained EBLEX regional benchmarking officer, pulling together farm costs and physical performance information.

Following analysis, farmers receive an enterprise report highlighting strengths and weaknesses of their business, compared to other operations in the country. Their stats will, anonymously, contribute to a wider picture of beef and sheep meat production costs for England.
