Sri Lanka Update: Vets Issue Fly Warning After 1000 Cattle Die
SRI LANKA – Farmers are being urged to move cows away from flies after an unknown disease has claimed the lives of around 1,000 cattle.

Veterinary sources have revealed that the east coast town of Batticalao has been afflicted with an illness suspected to be caused by parasites spread by flies.
The disease kills causes a drop in milk yield and then death from reduced feed intake, the Columbo page has reported.
Vets are advising that cows be moved away from flies for treatment and pesticide technology is used to control flies.
These worrying reports coincide with news that national milk production increased by 28 per cent last year.
Milk Output
This is according to a report by the Sri Lankan Central Bank which attributed output growth to government funded development programmes. Schemes included the shipping of 500 Australian dairy cows to Sri Lanka to boost production.
The Columbo Page reports government aspirations to see national self-sufficiency by 2016.
