Russia Tackles Brucellosis in Astrakhan
RUSSIA - Since the beginning of the year a total of 40 cattle have had to be slaughtered in the Voldarsky district of Astrakhan because of brucellosis.The Russian veterinary authority, Rosselkhoznador, said that brucellosis in the Astrakhan region remains a difficult problem.
The villages of the Volodarsky district have has quarantine restrictions imposed on them, with special slaughter facilities provided for infected animals and a ban on the import and export of susceptible livestock.
The controls that have been put in place include testing the cattle before they are put out to pasture in the spring and when they are brought in to barns for the winter.
Rosselkhoznador has also carried out special testing and vaccination in the Sarmantaevka and Multanovo areas of Volodarsky.
The veterinary authority said that the main source in the transmission of the disease is untreated milkwhich comes from infected animals and it has issued a warning not to buy dairy products of unknown origin.
It is encouraging consumers to buy meat and dairy products from places that have been inspected and passed by Rosselkhoznador inspectors.
