Survey Finds Milk Consumption and Spending Down for 2012
SPAIN – On average the amount spent on milk last year contracted slightly, finishing at 3.48 per cent of all food spending.This is according to Consumer Panel surveys carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture which found spending on milk fell by 0.5 per cent, closely mirrored by consumption, dropping 0.4 per cent.
In total the Spanish consumer bought 3.4 billion litres at an average cost of €0.68/litre of which 96.1 per cent was long life milk, a 0.2 per cent drop on 2011.
Semi-skimmed milk was the most popular product which accounted for 42.5 per cent of packaged milk.
Whole milk consumption dropped 4.7 per cent from 2011 levels to 29.1 per cent – edging out skimmed milk which was 28.4 per cent of household consumption.
Skimmed milk sold for the highest average of €0.72/litre which amounted to a 0.4 per cent fall on 2011.
The survey shed light on consumer patterns. Households with the highest consumption were families with children.
Milk consumption was greatest in Castile and León, Extremadura and La Rioja whereas Murcia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands came out at the bottom of consumption figures.
