EU Cattle Herd Increases 1.1 per cent

EUROPEAN UNION – Latest cattle figures show an overall EU herd increase of 1.1 per cent on last year.

This, the Austrian Government says, is an increase of over 508,000 animals.

Reaching almost 22.9 million the EU dairy herd increased by 186,000, aided in part by German herd figures remaining stable at 4.19 million.

Austrian cattle figures dropped 1.1 per cent to 1.95 million with a 0.8 per cent fall in dairy cow numbers to 523, 369.

The strongest increase was seen in Hungary (+8.5 per cent) to 753,000 units. 

France has the most cattle of any EU country with 19 million, down 0.5 per cent on 2011.
