Bats Tackled Following Rabies Outbreak

According to the government the disease poses a threat to humans as well as cattle.
Spread by vampire bats, the rabies outbreak has been detected on a small number of cattle ranches in Tzucacab, Yucatan, according to a report from Criterio.
Manuel Escoffie Pompey, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and food reported the case, confirmed disease presence on the Yucatan peninsula.
“The cases are very few but have been fought. There is a permanent campaign in place because bovine paralytic rabies poses a threat to all cattle,” said Mr Pompey.
Vampire bats are common in tropic and sub-tropic areas across the Americas. The government believes the disease is transmitted by the species Desmodus rotundus.
At a press hearing Mr Pompey announced that the disease is being combatted through capturing the vectors.
