Cheese Production Up 7 Per Cent on 2011

ITALY –Surging cheese production trends have continued through 2012 amounting to 277,294 tons, according to the National Institute for Statistics.

Overall the increase is 7.2 per cent up on January to November 2011. The Italian Dairy Association noted increases in Grana Padano and Parmigiano (+7 per cent), Fiore Sardo and Pecorino (+11 per cent), Asiago, Caciocavallo, Montasio and Ragusa (+16 per cent).


Contrastingly, negative figures were seen for Robiola which posted quantities 4 per cent lower than January to November 2011. Provolone production numbers were stationary, falling just 0.1 per cent.

Cheese exports stand at €1.822 billion, exceeding that of €1.499 million worth of imports.
