Opportunity to Hear Cow Health and Welfare Expert
GLOBAL - DairyCo is holding two live webinars with renowned expert Professor Nina Von Keyserlingk of the University of British Columbia, Canada.
Prof. Von Keyserlingk is recognised internationally for her research on care and housing for dairy cows and calves. The webinars will be an opportunity for dairy farmers and industry experts to hear her speak about her latest research findings and how they translate into practice on farm.
Prof. Von Keyserlingk's interests include understanding the links between behaviour and nutrition, particularly in welfare related issues. Some of her current work in this area includes the use of feeding behaviour to predict animal health and productivity, specifically at the time of transition.
She is also interested in understanding how knowledge of natural behaviour can help provide practical solutions to current problems in the housing and management of food production animals.
The webinars will take place on 12 February. The first will be on Improving cow comfort on farm the benefits of welfare assessments, click here to sign up.
Prof. Von Keyserlingk will look at current research work from her team on evaluating the feeding area, cubicles and standing areas in cattle housing from the cow's perspective - asking how these aspects affect cow health, behaviour and wellbeing.
The second webinar will be Transition cow management - health and welfare- Prof. Von Keyserlingk will discuss how management practices during the transition period can influence infectious and metabolic disease as well as lameness in the months post calving.
