Milk’s Importance Stressed at Green Week
GERMANY – Vital for its economic and environmental contributions, the dairy industry is of significant importance, said Parliamentary Secretary to the Agricultural Minister, Peter Bleser, at Green Week on Monday.Speaking at the premier food production fair in Berlin on Monday, Mr Bleser revealed that 20 per cent of national agricultural production value comes from milk. The vital stewardship role of dairy farmers and the subsequent impact on the landscape was also emphasised.
Stating the importance of a strong and vibrant dairy industry, Mr Bleser said: “The dairy market is growing on a global scale and the excellence of the German product, alongside market orientation and sustainability means our farmers can meet these new demands."
Current ‘soft landing’ strategies across Europe regarding the introduction of a quota free market were said to be based around reducing the importance of the quota gradually. Mr Bleser praised the farmers for adjusting to challenges imposed at the market control level.
Mr Bleser further discussed policy changes saying that new farm support through a system that focuses payments on direct support payments will be another change requiring adaptation. The milk package however furthers opportunities in the market as producer bargaining power will improve.
