Because of high feed costs, most analysts have been expecting poultry production to be down in 2013. But, USDA says the number of broiler-type eggs set the week ending January 5 was up 1.6 per cent from a year ago. This was the fourth consecutive week with egg set above the year-ago level.

The bearish news continued today with USDA's January production and price estimates. USDA changed their forecast for 2013 beef production from down 5.0 per cent compared to last year to down 4.3 per cent. USDA changed their pork production forecast from down 1.7 per cent to up 0.2 per cent.

Broiler production in 2013 is now predicted to be down 0.4 per cent rather than down 1.3 per cent. Their forecast of turkey production changed from down 3.2 per cent to up 0.3 per cent. Total red meat and poultry production in 2013 is now predicted to be 1.3 per cent lower than in 2012 rather than down 2.6 per cent. USDA increased their estimate of feed and residual for grains by 395 million bushels.
