Farmers Given Cheaper Nutrition Options
MEXICO - Smallholders could be offered animal nutrition alternatives to reduce productions costs based on a study of INIFAP agency of the SAGARPA.
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food has developed a feeding system for a dairy family in central Mexico which includes the use of agricultural by-products and a balanced diet to streamline the production of small livestock units and backyard.
Based on the study conducted at the Center for Regional Research Center National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock (INIFAP), in Tlaxcala, the goal is to provide producers with new alternatives to animal feed in order to increase the profitability of their production units in the central region of the country.
This, says the study, allows the producers self-sufficiency in food production at lower cost, especially in areas with high potential forage production per hectare.
The study, done in conjunction with the Foundation, produces action-points stating that diets should be balanced in relation to nutrient requirements related to productive phase (weaning, developing heifers and pregnant). This is so cattle acquire the necessary underpinnings for milk production, efficiently and inexpensively to potentiate the profit margin.
In the period January-November 2012 were produced 10 000 198 million liters, representing an average monthly production of 927 million 124 thousand liters.
