Butchers Sales Down For December Quarter
AUSTRALIA - Sales performance was notably lower for butchers in 2012 across all meat categories, a Meat and Livestock Australia survey undertaken by Millward Brown has revealed.

Beef, lamb and chicken sales all recorded an eight percentage point drop in ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ sales compared with last year, while pork fell seven percentage points.
Beef sales performed best for the butchers surveyed over this period, with 33 per cent reporting ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ sales, and a further 44 per cent reporting ‘good’ sales. This was ahead of chicken, with 31 per cent ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ and 41 per cent ‘good’, and lamb with 26 per cent ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ and 46 per cent ‘good’. Of the four main meats sold, pork was the poorest performer, with just 22 per cent ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ sales and 41 per cent ‘good’.
The more popular cuts during the December quarter were beef steaks (although not to the extent of 2011, particularly at the premium end), lamb in general and sausages – with hot weather, the quality of beef, the price of beef and lamb and the BBQ season the main influences.
